Abstract:

Journal (1869-1874) of a United States Navy officer containing his handwritten observations, ruminations, quotations, verses, aphorisms, and essays on a wide variety of topics. Includes an account of a speech he attended given by George Francis Train in Benicia, California [June 5, 1869], and an account of his trip home from California to Ohio via the recently completed Trans-Continental Railroad taken during a three month leave of absence from the Navy after serving on the USS Cyane. Many of the titles and first letters of the entries are embellished with decorative accents and also contain several small sketches including one of George Francis Train lecturing on stage, and three portrait drawings of women. Includes his official letter granting the leave of absence on letterhead stationery of the Navy Department, Bureau of Navigation and Office Detail, dated July 27, 1869, and one portrait photograph of a seated Roben wearing a ceremonial naval uniform taken at some point later in his life (circa 1910, b & w, 8 1/2 x 11 in.).

Douglas Roben (May 4, 1847 - Dec. 19, 1935) was born in Ohio. He entered the Naval Academy as Midshipman on September 23,1862 and commissioned as Master of the USS Cyane on March 26, 1869. In November, 1872 he was placed on the retired list for disability incurred in the line of duty due to eye problems caused by taking solar navigation observations. He later became an attorney and practiced law in Big Rapids, Michigan specializing in real estate cases.
The U.S. Navy's Bureau of Navigation was established in 1862. Principal responsibilities were to provide nautical charts and instruments and to oversee several activities involved navigation research, including the Naval Observatory. From 1865-1884, the Bureau was responsible for the Office of Detail, which handled the assignment and detailing of naval officers. In 1942, the Bureau was renamed the Bureau of Naval Personnel (BuPers), under which name it continues today.
